What if your next date didn't start with a dating app?
No carefully curated profile.
No weeks of messaging.
No trying to figure out what to wear based on someone's carefully selected five photos.
Just two strangers, meeting for the first time, with a photographer there to capture whatever happens next.
Welcome to Stranger Sessions.
A Stranger Session is a unique photography experience in Edmonton that brings two people together for a curated, blind-date-style photoshoot. It's part dating experiment, part creative experience, and part opportunity to step outside your comfort zone.
And yes, there will probably be some nervous laughter.
That's kind of the point.
What is a Stranger Session?
A Stranger Session is a photoshoot where two people who have never met come together for the first time and are photographed as they get to know each other.
Instead of spending weeks swiping and messaging before finally meeting, you get to skip straight to the real-life part.
I'll thoughtfully match participants based on things like personality, interests, lifestyle and what they're looking for. From there, I'll create a relaxed experience where you can actually interact, talk, laugh and see if there's a connection.
The goal isn't to manufacture chemistry.
It's to create space for it to happen naturally.
And whether that connection turns into a relationship, a friendship, or simply a really funny story you tell your friends later, you'll leave with photographs documenting the experience.
How does a Stranger Session work?
You might be wondering: Okay, but what actually happens when I show up?
Here's the general idea.
1. You apply
Stranger Sessions are designed for Edmonton singles who are open to meeting someone new and trying something a little different.
You'll answer a few questions so I can get to know your personality, interests and what you're looking for.
2. I will try my best to find your match
This isn't a random pairing.
I'll look through the applications and consider compatibility, personality, interests and the kind of person you might genuinely enjoy meeting.
That said, I can't promise that I'll always have a match waiting for you. Stranger Sessions depend on who applies, and I'm building the pool of participants as I go.
Right now, I have several women interested in participating, and I'm especially hoping to hear from more men who would be open to being part of a Stranger Session.
I'm also very interested in welcoming queer singles who would like to participate. Stranger Sessions aren't limited to one type of connection, and I'd love to create opportunities for people of different backgrounds, identities and orientations to meet someone new.
So if you've been thinking, "This sounds fun, but I'm not sure if there will be someone for me," don't count yourself out.
Apply anyway.
The more people who apply, the more possibilities there are for creating a great match.
3. You meet for the first time
This is where things get interesting.
You arrive, meet your match and start getting to know each other.
And yes, those first few minutes might feel a little awkward.
That's normal.
You're meeting a stranger. I'm standing there with a camera. There's probably going to be a nervous laugh or two.
But that's also what makes the photographs so much more genuine.
4. We explore and photograph the experience
Rather than standing in one spot taking traditional posed portraits, I'll guide you through prompts, movement and activities that give you something to actually do together.
Think walking, talking, exploring, laughing, getting a little silly and slowly becoming more comfortable around each other.
I'll photograph both the obvious moments and the tiny ones:
The first laugh.
The nervous glance.
The moment you start relaxing.
The inside joke that happens halfway through.
The moment you realize you might actually like this person.
Those are the moments I want to capture.
Is a Stranger Session a blind date?
Sort of.
It's definitely inspired by the idea of a blind date, but it's not your typical first date.
You're not being left alone at a restaurant and expected to figure everything out yourself.
I'm there to guide the experience and photograph it.
That means the session gives you something to focus on while you're getting to know each other — which can take some of the pressure off.
And unlike a traditional blind date, you get a gallery of photographs documenting the experience.
So even if there isn't romantic chemistry, you still walk away with a pretty great story.
Why do a Stranger Session instead of using a dating app?
Let's be honest: dating apps can be exhausting.
Swipe. Match. Message. Ghost. Repeat.
Eventually, meeting someone in real life can feel like the most intimidating part.
Stranger Sessions flip that idea around.
Instead of trying to decide whether someone is interesting based on a handful of photos and a short bio, you actually get to meet them.
You get to hear their voice.
See how they laugh.
Find out what they get excited about.
Notice whether conversation feels easy.
And maybe discover that the person you would have immediately swiped past is actually someone you'd really enjoy getting to know.
Is a Stranger Session awkward?
Probably.
And that's okay.
In fact, I think a little awkwardness makes the experience better.
You're meeting someone for the first time. You're not supposed to immediately act like you've known each other for ten years.
I'll give you prompts and direction throughout the session so you aren't left wondering, "Okay... what are we supposed to do now?"
My job isn't just to take pretty photographs.
It's to help create an environment where you can relax enough for the real moments to happen.
What if we don't have chemistry?
That's part of the experiment.
Not every connection becomes a love story.
Sometimes two people meet and immediately click.
Sometimes it takes a little longer.
Sometimes you realize you're better as friends.
And sometimes you simply have a really fun afternoon with a stranger and leave with a collection of photographs you never could have planned.
There's no pressure for every Stranger Session to end with a happily-ever-after.
The experience is about connection, curiosity and being willing to try something new.
Stranger Sessions in Edmonton
Edmonton is actually a pretty great city for this kind of experience.
There are neighbourhoods to wander, local shops and cafés, parks, the river valley, interesting architecture and plenty of little pockets of the city that can become part of the story.
But I don't want every Stranger Session to look the same.
Part of the fun is hearing from both people about what they would actually enjoy doing together.
Maybe there's a restaurant you've been wanting to try.
Maybe you've always wanted to check out a particular Edmonton neighbourhood.
Maybe there's an activity you've had on your list but haven't had a reason to do.
Or maybe you're new to Edmonton and have been looking for an excuse to explore more of the city.
Tell me about it.
When you apply for a Stranger Session, I'd love to hear if there's somewhere you've been wanting to go, something you've been wanting to try, or an Edmonton experience that's been sitting on your list.
You might already have the perfect first-date idea in mind — you just haven't had the right person to do it with yet.
That's where the Stranger Session comes in.
I'll take both people's ideas and personalities into consideration when planning the experience, so the session can feel less like a staged photoshoot and more like a real first date that happens to be beautifully documented.
The setting isn't just a backdrop.
It's part of the experience.
Because years from now, I don't want you looking at these photographs and thinking, "That's the photoshoot where I stood against a white wall."
I want you to remember:
"That's the day I met a stranger."
"That's where we went."
"That's what we laughed about."
"That's what it felt like before we knew each other."
Who should apply for a Stranger Session?
This experience is probably for you if:
-You're single and open to meeting someone new.
-Dating apps aren't really your thing.
-You're tired of doing the same first dates.
-You enjoy trying new experiences.
-You're a little adventurous.
-You're comfortable with the possibility of being outside your comfort zone.
-You like the idea of having professional photographs taken.
-You'd rather have a real conversation than spend weeks texting.
-You're open to seeing where a connection goes without putting too much pressure on it.
-You're new to Edmonton and want to explore the city.
-You already have a fun date idea you've been wanting to try.
-You don't need to be a model.
-You don't need to know how to pose.
And you definitely don't need to have your entire dating life figured out.
You just need to be willing to show up.
Looking for a unique date idea in Edmonton?
Maybe you're not looking for a Stranger Session for yourself.
Maybe you're simply searching for something different to do in Edmonton.
There are plenty of traditional date ideas around the city — dinner, drinks, coffee, walks, movies.
But sometimes the best memories come from doing something you've never done before.
A Stranger Session is designed to be exactly that:
Something different.
Something you'll probably talk about afterward.
Something that gets you out of your normal routine.
And something that gives you photographs of a moment you could never recreate.
